Stool-eating Problem

Q:

Gross! My Teddy eats his stools! Why did this happen? What could be done?

A:

Coprophagy, stool-eating, can be a result of hunger, boredom or indigestion. Puppies may eat stools due to training indiscretion. This is to destroy evidence before being discovered by their owners. Continuous practice of stool-eating may be a nutritional problem. When large quantity of undigested protein or fats are passed out in the stool, the dog may be attracted to finish their waste. What goes in, comes out, and goes in again. A vicious cycle in this case.
To break this vicious cycle, the first step is to ensure your dog is on a highly digestible premium ingredients dry food. Next to reinforce the treatment, you could try medication to stop coprophagy. As prolonged hours alone may lead to coprohagy, you are advised to clear Teddy's waste immediately and leave no chance for copraphagy.
Consumption of stools can lead to growth of internal parasites like tapeworms, hookworms or roundworms, you are also advised to quickly deworm Teddy to prevent diseases.
Continuous observation and training is advised.

Q:

Muffin had never eaten its stools until recently. We realised this happen after our maid left. Since he was alone for one month in the daytime, he had been eating its stools. Could he be showing his anger? How to break this habit?

A:

Dogs are innocent beings, not the scheming and revengeful type definitely.
If Muffin has been on the same diet before your maid left and had never practised coprophagy before, then boredom is the problem. Boredom- the curse of dogs. Dogs hate boredom. Left with nothing to do, Muffin probably resorted to stool-eating to kill time. Sounds disgusting? Yes, to you. But to dogs, eating stools is an entertainment.
To break this habit, first step: get medications from your pet store to deter coprophagia. Next, ensure Muffin has plenty of exercise before he is home alone. Try going for a morning jog with Muffin or play fetch with him until he is tired. This is to ensure he will be resting and recharging his energy later rather than channelling his energy to somewhere else later. When he's all alone, give him a comfortable dog mattress for him to rest and a little toy for him to play should he feel energetic in the middle of the day.
Patience and love is the solution to break this habit. Try the above methods.
