Destructive chewing

Q:

My Beagle Dido is a monster. He chews my leather couch, my husband's Nike shoes, my favourite Levis jeans and even the walls. Can I train him? I am going mad.

A:

Beagles are naturally destructive when bored. The good news is they can be trained. Beagles are highly motivated by treats and they love to play. Give Dido a treat toy filled with treats so that he can channel his energy on the treat toy .

Teething is a natural stage every owner must go through with their puppies. Your job is to train Dido to chew and play with approved objects. Give Dido only one toy or and one chew at a time. Try toys rotation. Too many toys and chews given will only confuse Dido and worsen the situation.

Monitor Dido closely whenever possible. And if she is aiming at your shoes, clap your hand loudly and say ‘No' firmly. When you reprimand her, you are playing the role of a pack leader. And if she ignores you despite your commands, grip her from the scruff of her neck like how the mother dog picks up her pup, say ‘No' and put her down.

Puppies learn by repetitions. With continuous training, Dido will kick her habit in a matter of time.

Q:

My pup likes to chews and destroys. My house always looks like a place ransacked by a robber . Out of anger, we always use a cane to whack her. Is this the only way?

A:

Of course not! Hitting your pup inspires fear. Dogs chew to relieve anxiety and kill boredom. Hitting backfires: your pup loses trust in you, it may either become too submissive or aggressive. Worse, your pup may become even more destructive as it may associate punishment as an acknowledgement. If your belongings are already destroyed, your pup will not comprehend the mistake. Ignore your pup. Put your pup in a room and tidy up. Do not let your pup watch you while the mess is cleared. You wouldn't want her to think you are appreciating her creation.

Confine your pup to a small area whenever it is home alone. Give your pup a treat or chew to get it associate confinement as enjoyable . In the confined zone, settle your pup with a comfortable bedding and allow an urine tray in another corner for convenient elimination.

Remember to always give your pup a chew to keep it occupied just before you or your family leaves home. A treat toy filled with treats can ideally helps your pup channel its energy when home alone.
