Urinary Tract Infection

Q:

I see crystals in my dog's urine. Please help!

A:

Urine saturated with excessive magnesium, phosphorus, sodium and calcium are proned to crystals formation. First, review your dog's diet. Check the percentage of magnesium, phosphorus, sodium and calcium. Next, check whether if you are feeding calcium and minerals supplement already found in your dog's diet. If yes, avoid these supplements now. Compare the percentage of minerals and calcium in your dog's diet with alternative diets. If the minerals and calcium found in your dog's diet are higher than most diets, switch your dog to a lower minerals and calcium diet. Better still, switch your dog to a reduced protein diet in this period. Too much protein means extra load for the kidney. Ensure your dog always has easy access to water supply.
